In the January, 1989 issue of the American Rifleman, the official publication of the National Rifle Association, Jim Rikhoff, in his regular column “Mixed Bag,” made the following statement. “In…listening to a lot of people across the country, I find many hunters and sporting gun owners more than a bit turned off by paramilitary guns and advertising, with the fear that it is going to harm the image of other sporting guns.” This statement raised quite a few hackles including those of one member from New York who wrote calling for Mr. Rikhoff’s resignation from the NRA. The purpose of the present article is neither to attack nor to defend Jim Rikhoff.
