Since the early 1990s, the members of Covenant Bible Church have been praying for the spread of the gospel in the central European country of Hungary. In 2007, God provided a means of getting directly involved in that work. Elders Phelps and Allsup met Attila Hajdu, a native Hungarian who was interested in planting a CREC church in Diosd, near Budapest.
Pastor Phelps traveled to Hungary for the first time in March of 2008 and later that year the Session voted to begin direct financial support for the Diosd Mission. Pastor Phelps has visited Diosd on four subsequent occasions and Attila has visited Alaska thrice, once with his family.
Presently, the Diosd Mission is operating under the oversight of the Evangelical Reformed Church (CREC) in Poznan, Poland, where Bogumil “Bubu” Jarmulak serves as Pastor. Covenant Bible Church is committed to financial, spiritual and logistical support for the work.
In the spring of 2009, the first annual CREC Europe Theological Conference was held in Diosd, with Rev. James Jordan and Rev. Jack Phelps as the speakers. The mission is slowly growing as Attila works with the local people, teaching both English language classes and Bible studies.
